The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was jointly awarded to Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus, and Alexei I. Ekimov for the discovery and development of quantum dots.

The three Nobel Prize laureates in Chemistry 2023 are being recognized for the discovery and development of these tiny particles, which have unique properties and now spread their light from television screens and LED lamps. They catalyze chemical reactions and their clear light can illuminate tumor tissue for a surgeon.

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics was jointly awarded to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz, and Anne L’Huillier “for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter.”

The three Nobel Prize laureates in Physics 2023 are being recognized for their experiments, which have given humanity new tools for exploring the world of electrons inside atoms and molecules. They have demonstrated a way to create extremely short pulses of light that can be used to measure the rapid processes in which electrons move or change energy.

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology was jointly awarded to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman “for their discoveries concerning nucleoside base modifications that enabled the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19.”

The discoveries by the two Nobel Prize laureates were critical for developing effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 during the pandemic that began in early 2020. Through their groundbreaking findings, which have fundamentally changed our understanding of how mRNA interacts with our immune system, the laureates contributed to the unprecedented rate of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times.

iNEXT-Discovery: NKI Biophysics course

NKI organises a course on the Biophysical Characterisation of Macromolecular interactions. It will take place in Amsterdam on November 6-9 2023. Participants will learn the theory and practice of several biophysical methods that are used to study interactions between macromolecules and with ligands. They will even learn what acronyms like MST, SPR, FP, FI, ITC stand for and will receive hands-on training with instruments offered by our commercial participants Malvern, nanoTemper, and Refeyn. A glimpse to single molecule methods will be offered by Lumicks and, in addition, it will be taught how to analyse data for both equilibrium and transient kinetics. There is a limited number of candidates (12) for which all local expenses - including accommodation - will be covered. A limited number of travel grants (250-350 Euro each) will also be available.
