Dear Colleagues,
welcome to the first Newsletter of 2017. CIISB Newsletter will be published biannually with the intention to summarise the most important developments at CIISB from the past 6 months.
Out of many developments from the past year period, we will highlight in this Newsletter only three most important ones: Foundation of INSTRUCT-ERIC, evaluation of CIISB by  Ministry of Education , Sports, and Youth of the Czech Republic and our new project OP VVV CIISB4HEALTH (Czech Infrastructure for Integrative Structural Biology for Health). Details of all activities can be found on our website, which has been redesigned and substantially reorganized during this summer.

CIISB new web page
Since September, has a new interface. Our website was redesigned with the intention to simplify access to the information content and to make the website more interactive. The web presents not only the CIISB Core Facilities at CEITEC and BIOCEV, but facilitates also submission of applications for open access to the CIISB research infrastructures, brings latest News form the structural biology community and information about the upcoming Events. A section Research Highlights  on the home page presents the most important results obtained using past 6 months. All sections are regularly updated and you are invited to send us any information, which you would like to share with our research community. We will be happy to publish it on the CIISB website. Please, contact us by the form on the web or by e-mail to the web administrator Jaroslava Urbánková. We wish you enjoyable browsing. 
Future investments supported by the project OP VVV CIISB4HEALTH
At the beginning of 2017, new OP VVV project CIISB4HEALTH (Czech Infrastructure for Integrative Structural Biology for Health) was approved by Ministry of Education Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic to cover the investment needs of the CIISB research infrastructure.
The project entered into its implementation phase at the beginning of April and will last until 2021. It brings 214 mil. CZK of the capital investment to modernization and methodological development of the CIISB research infrastructure. 
Interim Evaluation of Large Research Infrastructures 2017 by MEYS - Results
Performance of all Large Research Infrastructures included in the „Roadmap of the Czech Republic of Large Infrastructures for Research, Experimental Development and Innovation for the years 2016-2022” has been subject of the Interim Evaluation by International Evaluation Committee established by the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports of the Czech Republic. Consensus report of the International Scientific Panel marked performance of CIISB in all 9 evaluated categories, with the highest grade 5 - excellent. read more
Instruct-Eric was launched at a ceremony in London
CIISB has been a part of the pan-European infrastructure for structural biology INSTRUCT since 2012 as a national Affiliated Centre. In 2016, after completion of its construction phase, CIISB has been awarded the status of the INSTRUCT Centre. In 2017, INSTRUCT has transformed into ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium) and Czech Republic is among its founding members. The European Commission adopted the Instruct.ERIC by the decision on the 4th July 2017. Instruct is the 17th ERIC to be adopted and was inaugurated at a Royal Society awards ceremony yin London, UK on July 18, 2017.

Upcoming events

Day of National Research Infrastructures 2017, 2nd of November
Meeting to demonstrate and discuss the efficiency and importance of Large Research Infrastructures and their influence on development of R&D institutions.
Conference in Nové Hrady
XV. Discussions in Structural Molecular Biology and the 2nd User Meeting of the Czech Infrastructure for Integrative Structural Biology Meeting will be held in Nové Hrady on March 22 – 24, 2018. The details will be published in late October 2017 when also the registration web site will open.

Instruct Biennial Structural Biology Meeting, Brno, May 24 - 26, 2017
The third Instruct Biennial Structural Biology Meeting took place in Brno, Czech Republic, from May 24 till May 26, 2017 in the International Best Western Hotel. Two days conference showcased integrative structural biology and its impact on biological research and biomedicine.
The 2nd iNEXT Annual Users Meeting took place on 22nd-24th May 2017, in Brno (Czech Republic). Its aim was to gather the iNEXT partners providing access to various techniques of integrative structural biology and scientists and users who have been using the equipment, technology, and expertise of HORIZON 2020 funded iNEXT consortium. The conference was organized with a focus on strengthening contacts between iNEXT users, both academic and industrial, and on facilitating European scientific collaboration on projects that target translational research. Users had the opportunity to present their results to the iNEXT community, the iNEXT partners demonstrated the newest technologies developed in the JRAs, and feedback sessions between the iNEXT Management. read more
2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry - Cryo-electron Microscopy
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2017 was awarded to Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank, and Richard Henderson "for developing cryo-electron microscopy for the high-resolution structure determination of biomolecules in solution". read more
Professor Armin Delong passed away on October 5, 2017
Professor Armin Delong, a founder of electron microscopy in the former Czechoslovakia and prominent physicist, passed away on October 5, 2017 at the age of 92 (*29.1.1925 - ✝5.10.2017). Armin Delong, together with professor Vladimír Drahoš, developed the first commercially successful electron microscope BS 242. This instrument was awarded a Gold Medal at the World Exhibition EXPO 58 in Brussels (1958) and was subsequently produced by Tesla Brno.
